Hike to the summit of Black Snake Mountain in Allegany State Park

Black Snake Mountain in Allegany State Park

  • This will be a 4.5 mile hike in Allegany State Park, similar but not exactly the same, as a hike we did in May of 2013.

Pictures from that May 2013 hike can be seen here.

Pace will be 1.5 to 2 mph, but average speed with stops will probably be closer to 1 mph, so the hike should take 3 to 4 hours.  No one gets left behind and trail runners will probably be frustrated by the slow pace.

We will follow the park trail for a short ways, then head off trail up the north slope of Black Snake Mountain, then follow the ridge until we reach the NY-PA border. We will then follow the boarder until we meet with the official trail, then we follow the official trail back to the parking lot.

We will find several border markers, including monument 174.

The map shows the start of the trail in red, the off trail portion in purple, and the return on the park trail in blue.

The park trail does not go to the summit of Black Snake Mountain, that is why we have to go off trail to reach it.
