Becky and I explored the horse trail in Elkdale State Forest in the fall of 2013. This hike will start on the combined horse trail/snowmobile but when they split we follow the snowmobile trail to the western edge of the forest (shown in ORANGE on the maps). The round trip will be 4.3 miles.
We can extend the hike by 1.5 miles by taking the short loop horse trails in the eastern end of the park.
We will meet a the large parking lot just north of the DEC maintenance building, Ignore the “hunter’s parking” signed. The DEC Forest Ranger told me that was an old outdated sign.
We do have to cross a creek at the beginning of the hike. I checked on it today after the Mt. Onondaga bushwack. It was low enough to cross on rocks without getting my feet wet.
